Irony "The Gift of the Magi"

In "The Gift of the Magi," O. Henry uses irony to make the story realistic. For example,Della sold her beautiful long hair to buy the perfect gift for Jim for Christmas. Which was a silver watch chain for Jim’s watch. This shows that Della didn’t expect that Jim would sell his watch to buy her beautiful combs. This also show that Della expected him to have his watch and use his new silver watch chain. In addition,Jim sold his watch to by Della new combs for her hair. This is ironic because he thought he had gotten the best gift for Della and Della thought the same thing. This also shows that he sold his most possession prize for Della and Della sold her most possession for him. Which is ironic because they both had the same idea to sell their most possession prizee for each other. In conclusion, things always don’t turn out the way people expected it to be or thought it would be.
